11. The cones are large, soft-shelled and nutritious and fall intact to the ground beneath the tree before dehiscing . 12. The anthers dehisce , releasing the pollen, and the flower is then withdrawn below the water where the fruit develops. 13. The pods turn black with age and dehisce explosively to release their four to six seeds away from the parent plant. 14. Each fruit consists of two to five one-seeded segments, each of which dehisce into two valves upon maturity. 15.
