11. A stronger, 5.7 tremor hit the same epicentral area at 11 : 14 local time. 12. Most of the buildings in the epicentral area were constructed of thick walls made from rubble masonry cemented with mud mortar. 13. Earthquakes stronger than about magnitude 5.0 generate ground motions that are strong enough to be damaging in the epicentral area. 14. Near the epicentral region, fishermen reported disturbance of the sea, with tidal gauges recording waves at Yevpatoria and waves in Yalta. 15. About an hour after the quake, sea level readings from gauges in the epicentral region confirmed that a tsunami had been generated. 16. The " epicentral region " of an earthquake is defined as an elliptical area which encompasses the location of highest felt intensity of an earthquake. 17. According to recorded testimonies, luminous phenomena were observed, both in the epicentral area and in regions that are far away from the epicenter. 18. Many recurrent shocks were felt at the epicentral zone; the two strongest occurred on January 19 at 9 : 45 and on February 1. 19. The coast in the epicentral region subsided by up to 1.6 m during the earthquake and the land movement locally disrupted river drainage. 20. A large number of strong motion instruments captured the event, with an unexpectedly-high value seen on water tank near the epicentral area.
