Anglerfish typically have at least one long filament sprouting from the middle of their heads, termed the illicium . 13. Perhaps the most familiar species is " Illicium verum ", from which comes the spice star anise. 14. In " Haplophryne ", barbels are absent altogether, and the illicium is reduced to a rounded flap. 15. However, APG II does allow the option of segregating the genus " Illicium " as the family Illiciaceae. 16. On the top of the batfish's head there is a special body part that extends outward called an illicium . 17. The males are much smaller and dark brown in color, measuring up to long and lacking the illicium and esca. 18. The updated APG III system of 2009 does not recognize this family and includes " Illicium " in the Schisandraceae. 19. The rare Florida anise or yellow star anise ( " Illicium parviflorum " ) has been reported in the park. 20. The first dorsal fin ray is modified into an angling apparatus ( the illicium ) with a lure ( the esca ).
