11. Abundant discoveries of low technology iron slag bear witness to the long tradition of iron production in the area. 12. Near to the Alfoldean station the metalling was constructed from iron slag in a solid 30 cm thick mass. 13. Within the area pieces of metalworking as nails, knives or tools and more than 50k of iron slag were found. 14. There is evidence of bronze and iron smelting : furnaces, ore roasting pits and 200kg of iron slag were found. 15. Old black that had iron slag added during production to increase strength and opaqueness were at times broken in shipment. 16. The far side of Blue Herron Pond has pieces of iron slag scattered around the site of an old smith. 17. Later excavations found large amounts of iron slag , pottery, iron nails and ironworking tools in the southern part of the bailey. 18. Evidence for iron smelting, in the form of iron slag , and a small cemetery with three Roman cremations in pottery vessels were found. 19. Archeologists found traces of iron slag and coal, but only for a brief period before 14th century, before the arrival of the colonists. 20. Iron slag suggests that they had learned to use the local ores for smelting and other materials included copper alloy and glass were also used.
