11. After World War II there was a burst of building activity at the Fantome Island Lazaret . 12. In April 1951 the population of the Fantome Island Lazaret was 70 patients and six nuns. 13. The first lazaret was founded by Venice in 1403, on a small island adjoining the city. 14. For many of the 52 years that Peel Island was an operating lazaret it was inadequately staffed. 15. On the coast, there is a crossing at Lazaret into Lazaretto in Muggia municipality in Trieste province. 16. At the Lazaret killing station they held the sick so they would never see the gun while being shot. 17. To this day the site has been preserved and remains a confronting reminder of the conditions of the lazaret . 18. The 12 cows on Fantome Island were producing fresh milk for the lock hospital, but not the lazaret . 19. The new lazaret on Peel Island, opened in 1907, was designed and organised on the principle of isolation. 20. A Catholic Church and presbytery at the lazaret , first approved in 1940, were proceeded with from mid 1944.
