The mining method used in Raub is shaft mining and started at the Raub Hole. 14. Since 1956 the company had been working on plans to switch to sub-surface shaft mining . 15. The shaft mine 620 feet deep, opened in 1961 and employing around 200 people in 2010. 16. The Cliffs Shaft mine complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. 17. In 1865, Esmond started a gold mining company conducting deep shaft mining in the area north of Clunes. 18. The only way in and out of a shaft mine , was in the cage, cabled to the hoist. 19. It is a lament about the danger and drudgery of being a coal miner in an Appalachian shaft mine . 20. Fossils have also been found in the area deep shaft mines and in drilling core samples hundreds of feet down.
