21. Grazing has caused damage to many terrestrial habitats, causing heath and blanket bogs to degrade and preventing woodland regeneration. 22. There are Atlantic salt flats which fringe on the blanket bog , particularly in the lower reaches of the bay. 23. However, a thick layer of peat has formed over many of the higher hills, creating extensive areas of blanket bog . 24. The underlying geology of the mountain is granite, covered with blanket bog , which is a habitat for last ice age. 25. Much of the parish is rocky hill pasture, and there is some blanket bog in the west of the parish. 26. Merrick Kells contains three habitats of European interest : blanket bog , montane acid grasslands, and wet heath with cross-leaved heath. 27. The quality of the local land ( marshy, with much blanket bog ) renders it largely unsuitable for grain crops. 28. It is doubtful whether the extremely impoverished flora of Antarctica is sufficiently well developed to be considered as blanket bogs . 29. A substantial area of high quality, uplanted blanket bog also occurs within the site and this area contains many large pools. 30. The explanation for this is that the Silver Flowe is a floating or blanket bog and is consequently flat in nature.
