21. They can, however, survive light fires, by regenerating from seed, or sometimes vegetatively from basal epicormic shoots. 22. It was ringbarked by vandals in 1997, and it has responded by producing numerous epicormic shoots on its north side. 23. Trees can also grow back after a fire, due to the lignotubers and epicormic buds protected by the thick bark. 24.
