21. In 1923, BMW released its own unit construction shaft drive flat twin of 498 cc. 22. Intended for use with a sidecar, the Marte had a shaft drive and hand-operated transmission. 23. The XS-1100 followed in 1978, again with shaft drive . 24. The later cars had shaft drive and a three speed transmission located with the rear axle. 25. Final drive was a direct shaft drive with a transmission of two speeds forward and reverse. 26. The inline engine made this technologically feasible ( BMW motorcycles had already used shaft drives ). 27. Instead of a shaft driving the rear wheel, it would drive the front and sidecar wheels. 28. The shaft drive was constructed from a Chevrolet 1-ton truck differential that was cut in half. 29. This had a single overhead camshaft engine of 350cc, shaft drive and a pressed steel frame. 30. Reputedly this created problems with the shaft drive , as the gears tended to strip under power.
