31. In the original reaction shown in Figure 1 . naturally occurring chiral proline is the chiral catalyst in an Aldol reaction . 32. However, the aldol reaction is not formally a condensation reaction because it does not involve the loss of a small molecule. 33. For this work Mukaiyama was inspired by earlier work done by Georg Wittig in 1966 on crossed aldol reactions with lithiated imines. 34. Teruaki Mukaiyama is an expert on aldol reactions and not surprisingly his Taxol version contains no less than 5 of these reactions. 35. Additional reactions include aldol reactions , Mannich reaction, Michael reaction, amination, ?-oxyamination, and ?-halogenation. 36. Inspired by this, a modified tandem aldol reaction has been developed using the malonic acid half thioester as the enolate source. 37. To elongate the appendage by 2 carbons, acetyl-CoA is added to the aldehyde in an aldol reaction to afford prestrychnine. 38. Cooking ginger transforms gingerol via a reverse aldol reaction into zingerone, which is less pungent and has a spicy-sweet aroma. 39. Examples of chiral auxiliaries include, Evans chiral oxazolidinone auxiliaries ( for asymmetric aldol reactions ) pseudoephedrine amides and tert-butanesulfinamide imines. 40. In the highly versatile and widely used Evans Aldol Reaction , allylic strain played a major role in the development of the reaction.
