31. The main entrance to the castle was just above the village and consisted of two successive gatehouses . 32. Three of the Victorian gatehouses survive as does the Georgian dower house and the stable-block. 33. Several estates, complete with swimming pools and gatehouses , were built above the middle-class neighborhood. 34. The old, sombre gatehouses were demolished because they impeded transport and were an outmoded form of defence. 35.
