31. In the late 13th or early 14th century a medieval undercroft was built adjacent to the hypocaust , with a house above. 32. At the southern corner tower a hypocaust system of an older villa rustica from the 1st to the 3rd century was excavated. 33. Room no . 29 featured a hypocaust heating system, which probably had a caldarium, or hot plunge bath above it. 34. One of the most remarkable is the hypocaust , or greenhouse heating system, that was discovered in the basement of the building. 35. Orata was also credited by Vitruvius with the invention of the hypocaust ( underfloor heating ), although this is not fully confirmed. 36. The foundations of a Roman building with hypocaust were discovered in 1834 and are believed to be a villa and bath house complex. 37. The park is named after the Tessa, during which the 1800-year-old hypocaust and its covering mosaic floor were discovered. 38. The Hypocaust Mosaic is on view to the public and currently protected from the elements by a purpose-built building in the park. 39. The structure's ground-plan and the presence of the hypocaust , leaves little doubt that this was a bath-house. 40. Near the river crossing is the site of a Roman villa, the hypocaust of which was found about the middle of the seventeenth century.
