31. Corporal is deemed to be the substantive rank of the members carrying the appointment of master corporal. 32. On 18 July, he was promoted to the substantive rank of major in the Dragoon Guards. 33. He was promoted to the substantive rank of major in March 1907 and retired in July 1907. 34. Harrison's substantive rank remained unaffected until he received promotion to colonel on 8 May 1944. 35. Jeffs served in the Border Regiment during the Second World War with the war substantive rank of captain. 36. Following the war, he received the substantive rank of Captain in his regiment on 12 January 1902. 37. Unusually, he never held the substantive rank of brigadier, being promoted from colonel directly to major general. 38.
