Mr. Musharraf's speech can significantly affect Muslim views of Jews only if it is part of a larger effort. So, in the question period, I asked him if he would take steps to ensure that his vision of Jews be spread. He admitted he had not thought this through but on the spot there, in public, in view of a bank of television cameras, he made a commitment to do precisely that. Mr. Musharraf's reaching out to Jews is part of a much broader project of developing what he calls “ Enlightened Moderation ” in Islam. Although until now more talk than action, even the talk is a major achievement. Sadly, only he and one other Muslim leader, King Abdullah II of Jordan , are articulating a moderate version of Islam, but at least those two are doing so. For his efforts, Mr. Musharraf deserves appreciation and encouragement. Sep. 25, 2006 update : Musharraf describes the above event in his new book, In the Line of Fire :

Also, this may the right place to record a statement made by Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin weeks before his death (as reported in the Jerusalem Post , September 24, 1995), when he memorably addressed American Jews and told them that they have no right to patronize Israel. They have no right to intervene in the way the people of Israel have decided, in a very democratic way, on which direction to go when it comes to war and peace. They have the right to speak to us, but by no means to act, as Americans, against the policy of the government of Israel. . . . Whoever does not have daughters or sons who serve in the [Israeli] army has no right to intervene or act on issues of war and peace. Sep. 29, 2013 update : Schweitzer's finds that I disagree too much with the Government of Israel but David Speedie finds that I agree too much with it. For my response to Speedies see “ Do I Not Criticize Israeli Policies? ” The common theme in my responses to both of them is simple: I am an independent analyst who calls them as he sees them. Comment on this item

Sep. 4, 2006 update : Hana Al Jader , the wife of Saudi prince Mohamed Bin Turki Alsaud who is charged with enslaving two women, will plead guilty to two of the six counts of forced labor and four counts of violating immigration laws. One concerns visa fraud and the other harboring an illegal alien for financial gain. Dec. 22, 2006 update : Hana Al Jader may have faced up to 140 years in jail and $2.5 million in fines for enslaving two women, and she may have pleaded guilty to two counts, but all she got was a sentence of wo years probation with six months' home confinement. She must also pay a $40,000 fine and $206,000 in restitution to her former workers; and she must forfeit her second residence in Arlington, Va. Finally, she agreed to be deported to Saudi Arabia after the six months. Al Jader's lawyers seem to have convinced the judge that incarcerating her would be unfair to her six teenage children and her husband, Prince Mohamed Al Saud, who was severely injured in a car accident in 1991. According to court papers, Al Jader receives an annual stipend of $100,000 from the Saudi royal family.

Goldman reports that the department dispatched officers to Pakistani neighborhoods and “instructed them to look for reasons to stop cars: speeding, broken tail lights, running stop signs, whatever. The traffic stop gave police an opportunity to search for outstanding warrants or look for suspicious behavior. An arrest could be the leverage the police needed to persuade someone to become an informant.” NYPD established the Terrorist Interdiction Unit to handle these informants, including “mosque crawlers,” “café crawlers,” shopkeepers, and nosy neighbors. John O. Brennan, left, assistant to the president for Homeland Security and Counter-terrorism, met with NYPD Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, center, and Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence David Cohen at police headquarters in Sep. 2009.

Afghans burn an effigy of Barack Obama in Khost on Sep. 15. Minimal impact on U.S. presidential elections : Polls show that voter attitudes toward Obama and Mitt Romney have hardly budged over the past six months, suggesting that Islamists on the rampage will have little impact on the election results. Western civilization in the balance : Islamist aspirations grow with improved communications and weakened Middle Eastern governments, ultimately posing an existential question for Westerners: Will we maintain our historic civilization against their challenge, or will we accept Muslim dominion and a second-class dhimmi status?

Sep. 25, 2012 update : After a full two weeks of embarrassing mumbo-jumbo on the matter of freedom of expression Barack Obama used his speech to the United Nations at first lengthily to lambast the Innocence of Muslims (“crude and disgusting … an insult not only to Muslims, but to America”) and then, at last, to provide a robust defense of the American way: there are some who ask why we don't just ban such a video. The answer is enshrined in our laws: our Constitution protects the right to practice free speech. Here in the United States, countless publications provoke offense. Like me, the majority of Americans are Christian, and yet we do not ban blasphemy against our most sacred beliefs. Moreover, as President of our country, and Commander-in-Chief of our military, I accept that people are going to call me awful things every day, and I will always defend their right to do so. Americans have fought and died around the globe to protect the right of all people to express their views - even views that we disagree with.

When one puts this in the context of what Obama said off-mic to then-Russian president Dmitry Medvedev in March 2012 (“This is my last election. Then Israel's troubles will really begin. Sep. 5, 2012 update : Before the Democrats restored mention of Jerusalem as Israel's capital to its party platform, Romney called the omission “very troubling” and “one more example of Israel being thrown under the bus by the president.” Sep. 16, 2012 update :Appearing on NBC's Meet the Press , Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu twice avoided answering the question of whether Obama throws Israel “under the bus” or not, finally relenting the third time. Of course, he had to deny the charge, which does not enhance Mitt Romney's credibility. Meet the Press : Governor Romney for a year, and he said it in his convention speech, has said, “President Obama has thrown allies like Israel under the bus.” Do you agree or disagree with Governor Romney's charge? It's a serious charge. It was, it is, and will be. and will continue to be. and I can tell you there's no one-there's no leader in the world who's more appreciative than me of the strength of this alliance. it's very strong. There's no one in Israel who appreciates more than me the importance of American support for Israel. It's not a partisan issue. Meet the Press : … It seems to me for you to remain silent on whether this administration has thrown Israel under the bus is tantamount to agreeing with the sentiment. So where do you come down on that specific charge against President Obama ? Binyamin Netanyahu : There you go again, David, trying to draw me into something that is something not the case and is not my position. my position is that we have strong cooperation and we continue to cooperate with the best of allies. And Israel is the one reliable ally of the United States in the Middle East . Meet the Press : President Obama has not thrown Israel under the bus?
