East of Dover, a flight of six Swordfish torpedo bombers attacked the ships without result. 44. This operation incapacitated three of the six battleships at a cost of two torpedo bombers . 45. The Fleet Air Arm ( FAA ) contributed one squadron of Fairey Swordfish torpedo bombers . 46. It was used by the Fleet Air Arm as a torpedo bomber from 1930 until 1935. 47. The aircraft consisted of TBF Avenger torpedo bombers . 48. The daring Italian pilots however lost 14 torpedo bombers and another 46 were damaged in action. 49. Torpedo bombers came into existence just before the Taranto and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.50. Both types of torpedo bombers suffered heavy casualties.
