1. The beach dunes have yielded archaeological remains of ancient dwelling sites. 2. Barkas and Ayrton went out onto the beach dunes to sit and think. 3. The reserve is made up of salt marshes, maritime forests and beach dune areas. 4. The preserve also features several coastal ecotones, including maritime hammocks, mangrove wetlands, and beach dunes . 5. Immediately inland is the Temperate Beach Dune , a " pioneer zone " of vegetation growing along the primary dunes. 6. It is a natural environment-class Provincial Park created to help preserve oak savannah and the beach dune ecology. 7. It is found on sea cliffs, the edges of beach dunes and salt marshes and tolerates strong winds and sea spray. 8. Alnmouth's south-beach dune is calcerous, containing mainly marine-animal shell, and is only 2 300 years old. 9. The toll was evident everywhere on Hatteras Island, where wind and waves flung beach dunes onto the main highway and chewed up the asphalt. 10. The formation of the sandy beach dunes is due largely in part to the presence of coastal grasses and other plants establishing themselves in the sand.
