In 1789 Smeaton applied an idea by Denis Papin, by using a force pump to maintain the pressure and fresh air inside a diving bell. 10. Three concentric lamp wicks, supplied with rapeseed oil by means of a suction and force pump , were placed in the focal plane of the apparatus.
