1. Surge tanks on each headrace tunnel help prevent water hammer. 2. Navigation of the Shannon is now by the headrace canal which is wide. 3. The dam and headrace are laid out along natural rock formations in the river. 4. Feeding water to the penstocks is a long headrace tunnel with a three gate intake structure. 5. The dam diverts water east into three long and diameter headrace tunnels towards the actual power station. 6. They are fed by an underground headrace branched off from the canal in front of the northern wing. 7. Each headrace tunnel connects to a steel-lined penstock, each of which later bifurcates into two penstocks. 8. The major axis of the diversion dam is north to south and connects to a headrace which heads southeast. 9. In mid-2008, the Keldu�rst�fla and Ufsarst�fla Dams were complete and the Ufsarl�n pond headrace tunnel was ready. 10. A long headrace tunnel connects the reservoir to the power station which contains three 48 MW Francis turbine-generators.
