1. Hemothorax can put pressure on the lung and force it to collapse.2. Infrequently, patients with pneumothorax may develop spontaneous hemothorax . 3. A hemothorax , pneumothorax or both can occur if the chest wall is punctured. 4. A major vascular cause of hemothorax is aortic dissection or rupture of thoracic aortic aneurysms. 5. Less frequently, hemothorax occurs spontaneously. 6. This could cause blood or air to drain into the chest cavity, hemothorax or pneumothorax, respectively. 7. For example, if the hemothorax was caused by aortic rupture in high energy trauma, surgical intervention is mandatory. 8. Other complications which may occur include hemothorax , pleural effusion, pericarditis, wound infection and pneumonia and acquired scoliosis. 9. This finding indicates possibly but not with certainty, of a pleural effusion, empyema, blood in pleural space ( Hemothorax ). 10. After insertion of a chest tube to prevent hemothorax and / or pneumothorax, the fourth and fifth rib are approximated by an absorbable suture.
