1. He later finds a " Hesperornis " rookery amongst the rocky shoreline. 2. The first " Hesperornis " specimen was discovered in 1871 by Othniel Charles Marsh. 3. It is the only species of " Hesperornis " for which a nearly complete skull is known. 4. Like loons, " Hesperornis " were probably excellent foot-propelled divers, but ungainly on land. 5. The " Hesperornis " lineage may have derived even sooner or possibly independently from the ancestors of modern birds. 6. Locations for " Hesperornis " fossils include the Late Cretaceous marine limestones from Kansas and the marine shales from Canada. 7. Among these, it belonged to the Hesperornithidae, along with " Hesperornis ", the well-known namesake genus. 8. Later as Nick Cutter swims through the anomaly he finds himself in a tropical sea with a flock of " Hesperornis " swimming around him. 9. Alternately, some researchers have used Ornithurae to refer to a more restrictive node-based clade, anchored on " Hesperornis " and modern birds. 10. The teeth of " Hesperornis " were present along nearly the entire lower jaw ( dentary ) and the back of the upper jaw ( maxilla ).
