1. The Intermontane Islands were too big to sink beneath the continent. 2. Most of the province and its intermontane valleys have an arid climate. 3. The compression of the collision created fractures and folds in the Intermontane Belt. 4. The subduction zone of the Intermontane Plate shut down, ending the volcanic arc. 5. The Intermontane Plateaus come to an end at the Cascade Range and the Sierra Nevada. 6. The Intermontane and Insular Coalfields of British Columbia also contain deposits of Cretaceous bituminous coal. 7. Most of the lower slopes and intermontane basins of the range are covered with olive groves. 8. Now the Middle Magdalena basin is an intermontane basin situated between the uplifted Central and Eastern Cordilleras. 9. This zone includes the lower slopes of the Cordillera Oriental and the Cordillera Central and most of the intermontane valleys. 10. The main Central Otago centres, such as Cromwell, are found in the intermontane basins between the block mountains.
