1. Unlike a tokamak, a stellarator need not be perfectly symmetrical. 2. ,the Wendelstein 7-X reactor was the largest stellarator device. 3. Construction of the stellarator was originally expected to reach completion in 2006. 4. Applying the same logic to the stellarator appeared to offer the same advantages. 5. Several arrangements were eventually studied over time, notably the stellarator concept developed around 1950. 6. Spitzer invented the stellarator plasma device and is the namesake of NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. 7. He eventually managed to arrange a meeting with the director of the AEC to pitch the stellarator concept. 8. Spitzer's idea won funding and he began work on the stellarator under the code name Project Matterhorn. 9. A set of auxiliary coils is used to deliberately break the symmetry to mimic conventional stellarator properties for comparison. 10. In the tokamak, stellarator and most pinch devices, the plasma is forced to follow helical magnetic lines.
